Ingredients
- 1 pound fresh chestnuts
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 2 tablespoons olive oil (optional)
- 2 tablespoons melted butter (optional)
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 425°F (220°C). Using a sharp knife, score an “X” on the flat side of each chestnut to prevent bursting.
- Toss chestnuts with salt and olive oil (if using) in a large bowl.
- Spread chestnuts in a single layer on a baking sheet and roast for 20–30 minutes, until golden brown and aromatic.
- Let chestnuts cool for 5 minutes, then peel while still warm, removing both outer shell and inner skin.
- Serve immediately with melted butter for dipping, if desired.
Notes
- Sprinkle cinnamon or nutmeg before roasting for a spiced variation.
- Toss with rosemary or thyme for a savory twist.
- Drizzle maple syrup after roasting for a sweet, caramelized flavor.
- To reheat, bake leftovers at 350°F (175°C) for 5–10 minutes.
- Peel while warm for easiest shell removal.
