Ingredients

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • ½ cup brown sugar
  • 1 tsp cinnamon
  • ½ tsp nutmeg
  • ½ tsp cloves
  • 1 tsp baking soda
  • ½ tsp salt
  • 1 ½ cups applesauce
  • ½ cup butter, melted
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • ½ cup chopped nuts (optional)
  • 1 cup powdered sugar
  • 2 tbsp milk or heavy cream
  • ½ tsp vanilla extract (for glaze)

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a 9×13-inch baking pan.
  2. In a large bowl, whisk together flour, granulated sugar, brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves, baking soda, and salt.
  3. In another bowl, mix applesauce, melted butter, eggs, and vanilla extract until smooth.
  4. Pour wet ingredients into dry ingredients and stir until just combined. Fold in nuts if using.
  5. Spread batter into prepared pan and bake for 40–45 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean or with moist crumbs.
  6. Let the cake cool completely in the pan.
  7. Whisk together powdered sugar, milk or cream, and vanilla extract to make the glaze.
  8. Drizzle glaze over cooled cake and let it set before slicing.

  • You can skip the glaze for a less sweet version.
  • Use sweetened applesauce with reduced sugar to adjust sweetness.
