- ½ tsp salt
- 1 ½ cups applesauce
- ½ cup butter, melted
- 2 eggs
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
- ½ cup chopped nuts (optional)
- 1 cup powdered sugar
- 2 tbsp milk or heavy cream
- ½ tsp vanilla extract (for glaze)
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a 9×13-inch baking pan.
- In a large bowl, whisk together flour, granulated sugar, brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves, baking soda, and salt.
- In another bowl, mix applesauce, melted butter, eggs, and vanilla extract until smooth.
- Pour wet ingredients into dry ingredients and stir until just combined. Fold in nuts if using.
- Spread batter into prepared pan and bake for 40–45 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean or with moist crumbs.
- Let the cake cool completely in the pan.
- Whisk together powdered sugar, milk or cream, and vanilla extract to make the glaze.
- Drizzle glaze over cooled cake and let it set before slicing.
Notes
- You can skip the glaze for a less sweet version.
- Use sweetened applesauce with reduced sugar to adjust sweetness.
- Walnuts or pecans work best, but nuts are optional.
- Can be baked in different pans like Bundt or round pans—adjust baking time accordingly.
- The cake tastes even better the next day as the flavors develop.
