Description

Flaky, golden puff pastry bundles filled with tender asparagus, melted Gruyere cheese, and savory halal-friendly deli slices, perfect for an elegant and easy appetizer.


Ingredients

  • 1 bunch asparagus (350450 g), trimmed
  • 1 tablespoon extra virgin olive oil
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 2 sheets puff pastry, thawed
  • 1 cup (about 100 g) shredded Gruyere cheese
  • 12 slices smoked turkey or beef deli (halal)
  • 1 egg, beaten

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 220°C (425°F) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. Roll out puff pastry sheets on a floured surface and cut each into 6 equal squares.
  3. Toss asparagus with olive oil, salt, and pepper until evenly coated.
  4. Place one slice of turkey or beef deli on each pastry square.
  5. Add 3–4 asparagus spears and sprinkle with Gruyere cheese.
  6. Fold opposite corners of the pastry over the filling and press gently to seal.
  7. Place bundles seam-side down on the baking sheet.
  8. Brush tops with beaten egg.
  9. Bake for 12–15 minutes until golden brown and puffed.
  10. Serve warm.

Notes

  • Keep puff pastry cold for best puffing results.
  • Do not overfill to prevent soggy pastry.
  • Substitute cheese with mozzarella, cheddar, or Emmental if desired.
  • Add pesto or garlic butter for extra flavor.
  • Vegetarian option: omit deli slices and add more vegetables or cheese.
