Description

Tender, juicy Salisbury steak patties inspired by Bobby Flay, smothered in a rich mushroom and onion gravy. This comforting, savory dish is perfect for a hearty family dinner and pairs beautifully with mashed potatoes or rice.

Ingredients

  • For the patties:
  • 1 1/2 pounds ground beef (80/20 blend)
  • 1/2 cup plain breadcrumbs
  • 1 large egg
  • 1/4 cup whole milk
  • 2 tablespoons finely chopped onion
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil (for cooking)
  • For the mushroom-onion gravy:
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 medium yellow onion, thinly sliced
  • 8 ounces cremini or white mushrooms, sliced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1/2 teaspoon dried thyme
  • Salt and black pepper to taste
  • 1 tablespoon chopped fresh parsley (optional)

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, combine ground beef, breadcrumbs, egg, milk, chopped onion, garlic powder, salt, pepper, and Worcestershire sauce. Mix gently until just combined.
  2. Shape mixture into 4–6 oval patties about 3/4 inch thick.
  3. Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Cook patties for 4–5 minutes per side until browned. Remove and set aside.
  4. In the same skillet, add butter and olive oil. Add sliced onions and cook 4–5 minutes until softened.
  5. Add mushrooms and cook 5–7 minutes until browned. Stir in garlic and cook 30 seconds.
  6. Sprinkle flour over vegetables and cook 1–2 minutes, stirring to remove raw flour taste.
  7. Gradually whisk in beef broth. Add Worcestershire sauce and thyme. Bring to a simmer.
  8. Return patties to skillet, spoon gravy over them, cover, and simmer 10–15 minutes until fully cooked and gravy thickens.
  9. Adjust seasoning with salt and pepper. Garnish with parsley if desired and serve.

Notes

  • Avoid overmixing the beef to keep patties tender.
  • Add a splash of heavy cream for a richer gravy.
  • Use gluten-free breadcrumbs and cornstarch for a gluten-free version.
  • Internal temperature should reach 160°F (71°C).
  • Store leftovers refrigerated up to 4 days or freeze up to 2 months.
