Description
A hearty comfort casserole made with seasoned ground beef, thinly sliced potatoes, and melted cheddar cheese baked together until tender and golden.
Ingredients
- 1 lb (450g) ground beef
- 1 medium onion, diced
- 4 medium russet potatoes, peeled and thinly sliced
- 1 cup (120g) shredded cheddar cheese
- 1/2 cup (120ml) milk
- 2 tbsp (30g) butter
- 1 tsp salt
- 1/2 tsp black pepper
- 1/2 tsp garlic powder
- 1/2 tsp paprika
- 2 tbsp (15g) all-purpose flour
- 1/2 cup (120ml) beef broth
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).
- In a large skillet over medium heat, cook the ground beef and diced onion until the beef is browned and the onion becomes soft. Drain excess fat.
- Sprinkle the flour over the beef mixture, stir well, and cook for 1–2 minutes to remove the raw flour taste.
- Add the beef broth, milk, salt, black pepper, garlic powder, and paprika. Simmer for 3–5 minutes until the mixture slightly thickens.
- Grease a 9×13-inch baking dish. Layer half of the thinly sliced potatoes in the bottom.
- Pour half of the beef mixture over the potatoes and sprinkle with half of the shredded cheddar cheese.
- Repeat the layers with the remaining potatoes, beef mixture, and cheese. Dot the top with butter.
- Cover the dish with foil and bake for 40 minutes.
- Remove the foil and bake for another 15–20 minutes until the cheese is golden and bubbly and the potatoes are tender.
- Allow the casserole to rest for 5–10 minutes before serving.
Notes
- You can substitute ground beef with ground turkey or chicken for a lighter version.
- Add vegetables such as peas, carrots, or corn for extra nutrition.
- Mozzarella or Monterey Jack cheese can be used for a different flavor.
- For extra spice, add a pinch of red pepper flakes to the beef mixture.
- Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
- Reheat in the oven at 350°F (175°C) for 15–20 minutes or microwave individual portions for 2–3 minutes.
