Description

A hearty comfort casserole made with seasoned ground beef, thinly sliced potatoes, and melted cheddar cheese baked together until tender and golden.

Ingredients

  • 1 lb (450g) ground beef
  • 1 medium onion, diced
  • 4 medium russet potatoes, peeled and thinly sliced
  • 1 cup (120g) shredded cheddar cheese
  • 1/2 cup (120ml) milk
  • 2 tbsp (30g) butter
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp black pepper
  • 1/2 tsp garlic powder
  • 1/2 tsp paprika
  • 2 tbsp (15g) all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup (120ml) beef broth

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. In a large skillet over medium heat, cook the ground beef and diced onion until the beef is browned and the onion becomes soft. Drain excess fat.
  3. Sprinkle the flour over the beef mixture, stir well, and cook for 1–2 minutes to remove the raw flour taste.
  4. Add the beef broth, milk, salt, black pepper, garlic powder, and paprika. Simmer for 3–5 minutes until the mixture slightly thickens.
  5. Grease a 9×13-inch baking dish. Layer half of the thinly sliced potatoes in the bottom.
  6. Pour half of the beef mixture over the potatoes and sprinkle with half of the shredded cheddar cheese.
  7. Repeat the layers with the remaining potatoes, beef mixture, and cheese. Dot the top with butter.
  8. Cover the dish with foil and bake for 40 minutes.
  9. Remove the foil and bake for another 15–20 minutes until the cheese is golden and bubbly and the potatoes are tender.
  10. Allow the casserole to rest for 5–10 minutes before serving.

Notes

  • You can substitute ground beef with ground turkey or chicken for a lighter version.
  • Add vegetables such as peas, carrots, or corn for extra nutrition.
  • Mozzarella or Monterey Jack cheese can be used for a different flavor.
  • For extra spice, add a pinch of red pepper flakes to the beef mixture.
  • Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
  • Reheat in the oven at 350°F (175°C) for 15–20 minutes or microwave individual portions for 2–3 minutes.
