Description

Cinnamon Sugar Heart Doughnuts are soft, airy, homemade doughnuts coated in a sweet cinnamon sugar mixture. Lightly golden and tender inside, these heart-shaped treats are perfect for breakfast, dessert, or gifting.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup warm milk (110°F / 45°C)
  • 2 1/4 teaspoons active dry yeast
  • 2 tablespoons honey
  • 3 tablespoons granulated sugar
  • 1 large egg
  • 4 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 3 to 3 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 3 to 4 cups vegetable oil for frying
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar (for coating)
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
  • 2 tablespoons melted butter (for coating)

Instructions

  1. Combine warm milk, honey, and yeast in a large bowl. Let sit 5–10 minutes until foamy.
  2. Add sugar, egg, melted butter, and salt. Whisk to combine.
  3. Gradually mix in flour, one cup at a time, until a soft dough forms.
  4. Knead on a floured surface 8–10 minutes until smooth and elastic, adding flour if sticky.
  5. Place dough in a greased bowl, cover, and let rise 1–1 1/2 hours until doubled.
  6. Roll dough to 1/2 inch thickness. Cut with a heart-shaped cutter and let rest 20–30 minutes.
  7. Heat oil to 350°F (175°C) in a deep pot.
  8. Fry doughnuts 1–2 minutes per side until golden. Drain on paper towels.
  9. Brush warm doughnuts with melted butter.
  10. Mix cinnamon and sugar, then roll doughnuts in mixture until coated.
  11. Serve warm.

Notes

  • For filled doughnuts, pipe in vanilla cream, chocolate, or jam after frying.
  • Dip in melted chocolate instead of cinnamon sugar for a chocolate coating.
  • Use a glaze of powdered sugar and milk for a sweet variation.
  • Add nutmeg or cardamom to cinnamon sugar for spiced flavor.
  • Make mini doughnuts with a smaller cutter for bite-sized treats.
