Description
Cinnamon Sugar Heart Doughnuts are soft, airy, homemade doughnuts coated in a sweet cinnamon sugar mixture. Lightly golden and tender inside, these heart-shaped treats are perfect for breakfast, dessert, or gifting.
Ingredients
- 1 cup warm milk (110°F / 45°C)
- 2 1/4 teaspoons active dry yeast
- 2 tablespoons honey
- 3 tablespoons granulated sugar
- 1 large egg
- 4 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 3 to 3 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
- 3 to 4 cups vegetable oil for frying
- 1/2 cup granulated sugar (for coating)
- 1 1/2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
- 2 tablespoons melted butter (for coating)
Instructions
- Combine warm milk, honey, and yeast in a large bowl. Let sit 5–10 minutes until foamy.
- Add sugar, egg, melted butter, and salt. Whisk to combine.
- Gradually mix in flour, one cup at a time, until a soft dough forms.
- Knead on a floured surface 8–10 minutes until smooth and elastic, adding flour if sticky.
- Place dough in a greased bowl, cover, and let rise 1–1 1/2 hours until doubled.
- Roll dough to 1/2 inch thickness. Cut with a heart-shaped cutter and let rest 20–30 minutes.
- Heat oil to 350°F (175°C) in a deep pot.
- Fry doughnuts 1–2 minutes per side until golden. Drain on paper towels.
- Brush warm doughnuts with melted butter.
- Mix cinnamon and sugar, then roll doughnuts in mixture until coated.
- Serve warm.
Notes
- For filled doughnuts, pipe in vanilla cream, chocolate, or jam after frying.
- Dip in melted chocolate instead of cinnamon sugar for a chocolate coating.
- Use a glaze of powdered sugar and milk for a sweet variation.
- Add nutmeg or cardamom to cinnamon sugar for spiced flavor.
- Make mini doughnuts with a smaller cutter for bite-sized treats.
