Description

A creamy, comforting classic vanilla pudding topped with a rich warm vanilla sauce. Simple, nostalgic, and perfect for any occasion.

Ingredients

  • 2 cups whole milk
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 3 tablespoons cornstarch
  • 1 large egg yolk
  • 1 tablespoon unsalted butter
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract
  • 1/8 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup whole milk (for sauce)
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter (for sauce)
  • 3 tablespoons granulated sugar (for sauce)
  • 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract (for sauce)
  • 1 teaspoon cornstarch (for sauce)
  • 1 tablespoon water (for sauce)

Instructions

  1. In a medium saucepan, combine sugar, cornstarch, and salt for the pudding.
  2. Slowly whisk in the milk until smooth, then add the egg yolk and whisk well.
  3. Place over medium heat and cook, whisking constantly, for 8–10 minutes until thickened and gently bubbling.
  4. Remove from heat and stir in butter and vanilla extract until smooth.
  5. Divide the pudding into serving bowls and set aside.
  6. For the vanilla sauce, combine milk, sugar, and butter in a small saucepan over medium heat.
  7. Stir until butter melts and sugar dissolves.
  8. Mix cornstarch with water in a small bowl to form a slurry, then pour into the saucepan.
  9. Cook, stirring constantly, until the sauce thickens slightly.
  10. Remove from heat and stir in vanilla extract.
  11. Spoon warm vanilla sauce over the pudding just before serving.

Notes

  • Use whole milk for best texture and flavor.
  • Constant whisking prevents lumps and ensures smoothness.
  • Strain pudding if lumps form.
  • Pudding and sauce can be made ahead and stored separately.
  • Chill pudding for a different serving experience.
