Description

Crème Brûlée French Toast combines the creamy, custardy richness of crème brûlée with the warm, familiar texture of baked French toast. Topped with a crisp caramelized sugar layer, it’s a luxurious yet simple brunch treat.

Ingredients

  • 1 loaf of brioche or challah bread (1214 slices)
  • 4 large eggs
  • 1 cup whole milk
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 tablespoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • Pinch of salt
  • Optional toppings: fresh berries, powdered sugar, maple syrup

Instructions

  1. Slice brioche or challah into thick pieces and arrange in a greased baking dish, slightly overlapping.
  2. In a bowl, whisk together eggs, milk, cream, sugar, vanilla, cinnamon, and salt until smooth.
  3. Pour custard over bread, gently pressing slices to soak. Cover and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes or overnight.
  4. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Uncover and bake for 25–30 minutes until golden and custard is set. Broil briefly for extra color if desired.
  5. Sprinkle a thin layer of sugar over the top. Caramelize using a kitchen torch or under the broiler until crisp and golden.
  6. Let cool slightly before serving with your favorite toppings.

Notes

  • Use brown sugar for deeper caramel flavor.
  • Substitute milk and cream with plant-based options for a dairy-free version.
  • Add nutmeg or orange zest to the custard for variation.
  • Freeze unbaked soaked bread tightly wrapped for up to 2 months.
  • Reheat leftovers in the oven to retain texture.
