Description

Golden and crunchy onion rings with a light sweetness and customizable spice, perfect for snacking or as a flavorful side dish.

Ingredients

  • 12 large sweet onions
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup milk
  • 1 large egg
  • 3/4 cup bread crumbs
  • Oil for frying

Instructions

  1. Peel the onions and slice them into thick rings. Gently separate the rings and set aside.
  2. In a bowl, mix the flour, baking powder, and salt.
  3. In another bowl, whisk together the milk and egg.
  4. Slowly add the wet mixture into the dry ingredients and stir until smooth to create a batter.
  5. Place the bread crumbs in a separate shallow bowl.
  6. Heat oil in a deep pan over medium heat until hot (test with a bit of batter — it should sizzle and float).
  7. Dip each onion ring into the batter, then coat with bread crumbs.
  8. Carefully place the coated rings into the hot oil and fry until golden brown and crispy, flipping once if needed.
  9. Remove the onion rings and let them drain on paper towels before serving.

Notes

  • Use sweet onions for the best flavor balance, but regular onions also work.
  • Panko crumbs give a crunchier texture than regular bread crumbs.
  • Add chili powder or paprika to the flour mix for more spice.
  • Fry in batches to avoid overcrowding the pan and dropping the oil temperature.
