Description
Golden and crunchy onion rings with a light sweetness and customizable spice, perfect for snacking or as a flavorful side dish.
Ingredients
- 1–2 large sweet onions
- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon baking powder
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 cup milk
- 1 large egg
- 3/4 cup bread crumbs
- Oil for frying
Instructions
- Peel the onions and slice them into thick rings. Gently separate the rings and set aside.
- In a bowl, mix the flour, baking powder, and salt.
- In another bowl, whisk together the milk and egg.
- Slowly add the wet mixture into the dry ingredients and stir until smooth to create a batter.
- Place the bread crumbs in a separate shallow bowl.
- Heat oil in a deep pan over medium heat until hot (test with a bit of batter — it should sizzle and float).
- Dip each onion ring into the batter, then coat with bread crumbs.
- Carefully place the coated rings into the hot oil and fry until golden brown and crispy, flipping once if needed.
- Remove the onion rings and let them drain on paper towels before serving.
Notes
- Use sweet onions for the best flavor balance, but regular onions also work.
- Panko crumbs give a crunchier texture than regular bread crumbs.
- Add chili powder or paprika to the flour mix for more spice.
- Fry in batches to avoid overcrowding the pan and dropping the oil temperature.
