Description

Ingredients

  • 4 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 2 1/2 teaspoons salt
  • 3/4 teaspoon active dry yeast
  • 2 1/4 cups warm water

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, mix flour, sugar, salt, and yeast.
  2. Pour in warm water and stir until a sticky, shaggy dough forms.
  3. Cover with plastic wrap or a clean towel and let rest at room temperature for 12–18 hours, until bubbly and risen.
  4. Using floured hands, gently shape dough into a round loaf.
  5. Preheat oven to 450°F (232°C) with a Dutch oven inside to heat.
  6. Carefully place dough into the hot Dutch oven, cover with lid, and bake for 30 minutes.
  7. Remove lid and bake another 10–15 minutes, until crust is deep golden brown.
  8. Let cool slightly before slicing and serving.

  • Dough will be sticky—resist the urge to add extra flour.
  • Use instant yeast as a direct substitute if desired.
