Ingredients

  • 500 g strong white bread flour
  • 7 g sachet fast-action yeast
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 300 ml lukewarm water
  • 3 tablespoons olive oil

Instructions

  1. Mix flour, yeast, salt, and sugar in a large bowl until combined.
  2. Make a well in the center and add lukewarm water and olive oil.
  3. Stir until a dough forms, then knead on a floured surface for about 10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  4. Place dough in a lightly oiled bowl, cover with a damp cloth, and let rise in a warm spot for 1 hour, or until doubled in size.
  5. Preheat oven to 220 °C (428 °F).
  6. Punch dough down, shape into a loaf, and place on a baking tray. Cover loosely and let rise again for 30 minutes.
  7. Bake for 25–30 minutes, until golden brown and hollow-sounding when tapped on the bottom.
  8. Cool on a wire rack before slicing.

Notes

  • Brush baked loaf with melted butter for a softer crust.
  • Add herbs, nuts, cheese, or swap white flour for whole wheat or spelt for variety.
