Description

A soft and savory homemade bread packed with melted cheddar cheese and mild green chiles. This fluffy loaf has a golden crust and a flavorful interior, making it perfect as a side dish, appetizer, or snack for gatherings and family meals.

Ingredients

  • 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 packet active dry yeast (2 1/4 teaspoons)
  • 1 cup warm milk (about 110°F / 43°C)
  • 1/4 cup warm water
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 1/2 cups shredded sharp cheddar cheese
  • 1 cup chopped green chiles (fresh roasted or canned, drained)
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil (for greasing the bowl)

Instructions

  1. In a small bowl, combine warm water, sugar, and active dry yeast. Let sit for 5 to 10 minutes until foamy.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, combine warm milk, softened butter, and salt.
  3. Add the activated yeast mixture and stir well.
  4. Gradually add the flour, one cup at a time, mixing until a soft dough forms.
  5. Fold in the chopped green chiles and shredded cheddar cheese until evenly distributed.
  6. Turn the dough onto a lightly floured surface and knead for 8 to 10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  7. Place the dough in a lightly oiled bowl, cover with a towel, and let rise for 1 to 1 1/2 hours until doubled in size.
  8. Punch down the dough and shape it into a loaf.
  9. Place the dough in a greased loaf pan and cover. Let it rise again for 30 to 40 minutes.
  10. Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).
  11. Bake for 35 to 40 minutes until the top is golden brown and the loaf sounds hollow when tapped.
  12. Remove from the pan and allow to cool slightly on a wire rack before slicing.

Notes

  • Drain canned green chiles well to prevent excess moisture in the dough.
  • Sharp cheddar gives the strongest flavor, but Monterey Jack or mozzarella also work well.
  • Allow the bread to cool slightly before slicing to help it hold its shape.
  • You can sprinkle additional cheese on top before baking for a crispy cheesy crust.
  • If the dough feels sticky, add a small amount of flour while kneading.
