Description

Grilled Cheese Sloppy Joes combine savory seasoned ground beef with melty cheddar cheese, all sandwiched between crispy, buttery Texas toast. This hearty comfort food mashup is perfect for quick weeknight dinners or casual gatherings.

Ingredients

  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 yellow onion, finely diced
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1/2 cup ketchup
  • 2 tablespoons tomato paste
  • 1 tablespoon yellow mustard
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon brown sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon smoked paprika
  • 8 slices Texas toast bread
  • 8 slices cheddar cheese
  • 4 tablespoons unsalted butter, softened

Instructions

  1. Heat a large skillet over medium heat. Add olive oil and diced onion. Cook 3–4 minutes until softened.
  2. Add minced garlic and cook for 30 seconds until fragrant.
  3. Add ground beef, breaking it apart with a spoon. Cook 6–8 minutes until browned. Drain excess grease if needed.
  4. Stir in ketchup, tomato paste, mustard, Worcestershire sauce, brown sugar, salt, pepper, and smoked paprika.
  5. Reduce heat to low and simmer 5–7 minutes until thickened. Remove from heat.
  6. Butter one side of each slice of Texas toast.
  7. Place four slices butter-side down. Top each with one slice of cheddar cheese.
  8. Spoon beef mixture evenly over the cheese.
  9. Add another slice of cheddar on top of the beef, then cover with remaining bread slices, butter-side facing outward.
  10. Heat a clean skillet over medium heat. Cook sandwiches 3–4 minutes per side until golden brown and cheese is melted.
  11. Remove from heat, rest 1 minute, slice, and serve warm.

Notes

  • Keep the beef mixture thick to prevent soggy sandwiches.
  • Cook over medium heat to allow the bread to crisp without burning.
  • Store leftover beef filling up to 3 days refrigerated.
  • Reheat sandwiches in a skillet or air fryer for best texture.
  • Ground turkey can be substituted for a lighter option.
