Description

Soft and fluffy homemade hoagie rolls with a lightly crisp golden crust, perfect for sandwiches, subs, or serving alongside soups and salads.

Ingredients

  • 2 cups warm water (40–43°C / 105–110°F)
  • 1 tablespoon active dry yeast
  • 2 teaspoons granulated sugar
  • 5 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 1/2 teaspoons salt
  • 1 teaspoon olive oil

Instructions

  1. In a large mixing bowl, combine the warm water, active dry yeast, and sugar. Stir gently and let sit for about 5 minutes until the mixture becomes foamy.
  2. Add the olive oil and salt to the yeast mixture and stir to combine.
  3. Gradually add the flour one cup at a time, mixing until a soft dough forms.
  4. Transfer the dough onto a lightly floured surface and knead for 8 to 10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  5. Place the dough in a lightly oiled bowl, turning it once to coat the surface. Cover with a towel or plastic wrap and let rise in a warm place for about 1 hour until doubled in size.
  6. Punch down the dough and divide it into 6 equal portions.
  7. Shape each portion into a roll about 6 to 8 inches long and place them on a parchment-lined baking sheet.
  8. Cover and let the rolls rise again for about 30 minutes until slightly puffy.
  9. Preheat the oven to 200°C (400°F).
  10. Bake for 18 to 20 minutes until the rolls are golden brown.
  11. Remove from the oven and allow them to cool slightly before slicing or serving.

Notes

  • Make sure the water is warm but not hot to properly activate the yeast.
  • Kneading thoroughly helps create a soft and elastic dough structure.
  • For a crispier crust, place a small pan of hot water in the oven while baking.
  • The dough can be refrigerated overnight after kneading for convenience.
  • Rolls can be frozen after baking and reheated when needed.
