Description

These old fashioned cake donuts are tender, cakey, and warmly spiced with nutmeg. Baked instead of fried and finished with a simple sweet glaze, they’re a nostalgic, bakery-style treat made easily at home.


Ingredients

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 3/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 tsp baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp ground nutmeg
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 3/4 cup buttermilk
  • 2 eggs, beaten
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 2 tbsp unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 cup powdered sugar (for glaze)
  • 2 tbsp milk (for glaze)
  • 1/2 tsp vanilla extract (for glaze)

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C) and lightly grease a donut pan.
  2. In a large bowl, whisk together flour, sugar, baking powder, nutmeg, and salt.
  3. In a separate bowl, mix buttermilk, eggs, vanilla, and melted butter.
  4. Stir wet ingredients into dry just until combined; do not overmix.
  5. Spoon batter into donut pan, filling each cavity about 2/3 full.
  6. Bake for 8–10 minutes or until a toothpick inserted comes out clean.
  7. Whisk powdered sugar, milk, and vanilla to make glaze.
  8. Once donuts are slightly cooled, dip tops in glaze and place on a wire rack to set.
