Description
Orange bars are bright citrus dessert squares with a buttery crust and a smooth, sweet-tart orange filling, baked until soft and sliceable for a refreshing homemade treat.
Ingredients
- 2.5 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 cup granulated sugar
- 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
- 4 large eggs
- 2 cups granulated sugar
- 0.5 cup all-purpose flour
- 0.5 cup fresh orange juice
- 2 tablespoons orange zest
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease and flour a 9×13-inch baking pan.
- In a large bowl, combine 2.5 cups flour, 1 cup sugar, and softened butter. Mix until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
- Press the mixture evenly into the bottom of the prepared pan to form the crust.
- Bake the crust for 15–20 minutes until lightly golden around the edges, then remove from the oven and let it cool slightly.
- In another bowl, whisk together the eggs and 2 cups sugar until smooth.
- Gradually add 0.5 cup flour and whisk until no lumps remain.
- Stir in the orange juice, orange zest, and vanilla extract until the mixture is smooth.
- Pour the orange filling evenly over the slightly cooled crust.
- Bake for 30–35 minutes or until the filling is set and lightly golden.
- Allow the bars to cool completely before slicing into squares and serving.
Notes
- Fresh orange juice provides the best citrus flavor.
- Allow the bars to cool fully before cutting for clean slices.
- Dust with powdered sugar for a simple decorative finish.
- Line the pan with parchment paper for easier removal.
- Bars can be served chilled or at room temperature.
