Description

Sopaipillas are fluffy, golden fried pastries made with simple pantry ingredients. Lightly crisp on the outside and soft inside, they’re perfect served sweet with honey or powdered sugar, or as a savory side.

Ingredients

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 3 tablespoons shortening
  • 3/4 cup warm water
  • Oil for frying
  • Honey or powdered sugar for serving (optional)

Instructions

  1. In a mixing bowl, combine flour, baking powder, and salt.
  2. Cut in the shortening until the mixture becomes crumbly.
  3. Gradually add warm water and knead until a smooth, soft dough forms.
  4. Roll dough out on a floured surface to about 1/4 inch thick. Cut into squares or triangles.
  5. Heat oil in a deep pan to 375°F (190°C). Fry dough pieces in batches for 2–3 minutes per side until puffed and golden brown.
  6. Remove with a slotted spoon and drain on paper towels.
  7. Serve warm with honey or a dusting of powdered sugar if desired.

Notes

  • Add cinnamon to the dough for a warm, spiced flavor.
  • Serve with cheese or savory dips for a less sweet variation.
  • Pair with chocolate sauce, fruit preserves, or flavored honey for a dessert version.
  • Use vegetable or canola oil for even frying.
  • Ensure oil is hot enough to help sopaipillas puff properly.
