Description
These Southern-Style Green Beans are slow-simmered in savory broth with onions and garlic until tender and flavorful. This comforting, no-fuss side dish is perfect for family meals and holiday tables alike.
Ingredients
- 2 pounds fresh green beans, trimmed
- 1 medium yellow onion, finely chopped
- 3 cloves garlic, minced
- 4 cups chicken broth
- 1 teaspoon salt
- ½ teaspoon black pepper
Instructions
- Rinse and trim the ends of the green beans.
- In a large pot over medium heat, cook the chopped onion until soft and translucent.
- Add minced garlic and cook for about 30 seconds until fragrant.
- Add the green beans to the pot and stir to combine with the onion and garlic.
- Pour in the chicken broth to mostly cover the beans. Season with salt and pepper.
- Bring to a gentle boil, then reduce heat to low. Cover and simmer for about 3 hours, stirring occasionally, until the green beans are very tender and infused with flavor.
Notes
- Cook longer for deeper flavor—these beans only get better with time.
- Add Worcestershire sauce or a pinch of brown sugar for extra depth.
- Diced potatoes can be added during the last hour for a heartier side.
- Use red pepper flakes for a bit of heat.
- For slow cooker prep, cook on low for 6–7 hours.
