Description

Texas Toast Sloppy Joes are a hearty open-faced twist on the classic sandwich, featuring crispy garlic Texas toast topped with a rich, savory sloppy joe beef mixture and finished with melted cheese for a quick and satisfying comfort meal.

Ingredients

  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1 small yellow onion, finely diced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 cup tomato sauce
  • 1/2 cup ketchup
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tablespoon brown sugar
  • 1 tablespoon yellow mustard
  • 1/2 teaspoon smoked paprika
  • 1/2 teaspoon chili powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 8 slices frozen Texas toast garlic bread
  • 1 1/2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese or cheddar cheese
  • 1 tablespoon chopped parsley (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven according to the Texas toast package directions, usually 425°F (220°C).
  2. In a large skillet over medium heat, cook the ground beef and diced onion for 6 to 8 minutes until the beef is browned and the onion softened.
  3. Drain any excess grease from the skillet.
  4. Add the minced garlic and cook for about 30 seconds until fragrant.
  5. Stir in the tomato sauce, ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, brown sugar, yellow mustard, smoked paprika, chili powder, salt, and black pepper.
  6. Reduce heat and simmer the mixture for 8 to 10 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the sauce thickens.
  7. Meanwhile, place the Texas toast on a baking sheet and bake for 5 to 6 minutes until lightly golden.
  8. Remove the toast from the oven and spoon the sloppy joe mixture evenly over each slice.
  9. Sprinkle shredded cheese over the top.
  10. Return the baking sheet to the oven and bake for 3 to 5 minutes until the cheese is melted and bubbly.
  11. Garnish with chopped parsley if desired and serve hot.

Notes

  • Simmer the sloppy joe mixture long enough so it thickens and does not make the toast soggy.
  • Cheddar, mozzarella, Monterey Jack, or Colby Jack cheese all work well.
  • Ground turkey or chicken can be substituted for ground beef.
  • Add diced bell peppers with the onion for extra flavor and texture.
  • For a spicy version, add crushed red pepper flakes or diced jalapeños.
