Description
Texas Toast Sloppy Joes are a hearty open-faced twist on the classic sandwich, featuring crispy garlic Texas toast topped with a rich, savory sloppy joe beef mixture and finished with melted cheese for a quick and satisfying comfort meal.
Ingredients
- 1 pound ground beef
- 1 small yellow onion, finely diced
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 cup tomato sauce
- 1/2 cup ketchup
- 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
- 1 tablespoon brown sugar
- 1 tablespoon yellow mustard
- 1/2 teaspoon smoked paprika
- 1/2 teaspoon chili powder
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
- 8 slices frozen Texas toast garlic bread
- 1 1/2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese or cheddar cheese
- 1 tablespoon chopped parsley (optional)
Instructions
- Preheat the oven according to the Texas toast package directions, usually 425°F (220°C).
- In a large skillet over medium heat, cook the ground beef and diced onion for 6 to 8 minutes until the beef is browned and the onion softened.
- Drain any excess grease from the skillet.
- Add the minced garlic and cook for about 30 seconds until fragrant.
- Stir in the tomato sauce, ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, brown sugar, yellow mustard, smoked paprika, chili powder, salt, and black pepper.
- Reduce heat and simmer the mixture for 8 to 10 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the sauce thickens.
- Meanwhile, place the Texas toast on a baking sheet and bake for 5 to 6 minutes until lightly golden.
- Remove the toast from the oven and spoon the sloppy joe mixture evenly over each slice.
- Sprinkle shredded cheese over the top.
- Return the baking sheet to the oven and bake for 3 to 5 minutes until the cheese is melted and bubbly.
- Garnish with chopped parsley if desired and serve hot.
Notes
- Simmer the sloppy joe mixture long enough so it thickens and does not make the toast soggy.
- Cheddar, mozzarella, Monterey Jack, or Colby Jack cheese all work well.
- Ground turkey or chicken can be substituted for ground beef.
- Add diced bell peppers with the onion for extra flavor and texture.
- For a spicy version, add crushed red pepper flakes or diced jalapeños.
