Description

Soft, fluffy, and buttery homemade biscuits with flaky layers and golden tops, made in just 20 minutes with simple pantry ingredients.

Ingredients

2 cups all-purpose flour

1 tbsp sugar

1/2 tsp salt

4 tsp baking powder

1/4 tsp cream of tartar

1/2 cup cold butter, cubed

1 large egg

2/3 cup whole milk

2 tbsp melted butter (for brushing, optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 450°F (230°C).
  2. In a large bowl, combine flour, sugar, salt, baking powder, and cream of tartar.
  3. Cut in cold butter using a pastry cutter until pea-sized pieces remain.
  4. Stir in milk and egg just until combined; dough should be sticky but not overmixed.
  5. Turn dough onto a floured surface, sprinkle with flour, and knead gently 10–15 times.
  6. Pat dough to 3/4–1 inch thickness. Cut biscuits with a biscuit cutter or glass.
  7. Place biscuits on a parchment-lined or lightly greased baking sheet.
  8. Bake for 10–15 minutes or until golden brown.
  9. Brush with melted butter while warm, if desired.

Notes

  • Use very cold butter, milk, and egg for maximum flakiness.
  • Buttermilk can replace whole milk for a tangier flavor.
  • For a savory variation, add shredded cheddar and garlic powder.
  • Freeze unbaked biscuits for up to 3 months; bake from frozen with a few extra minutes.
  • Overworking the dough can make biscuits dense.
