Description
Buttery, flaky homemade chocolate croissants filled with rich melted chocolate and baked until perfectly golden. These bakery-style pastries are soft inside with crisp layered edges, making them perfect for breakfast, brunch, or dessert.
Ingredients
- 2¼ cups all-purpose flour
- 2 tablespoons granulated sugar
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 packet (2¼ teaspoons) instant yeast
- ¾ cup warm milk
- 1 large egg
- ½ cup unsalted butter, softened
- 1 cup dark chocolate chips or chopped dark chocolate
- 1 tablespoon unsalted butter
- 1 egg (for egg wash)
- 1 tablespoon milk (for egg wash)
Instructions
- In a large bowl, combine flour, sugar, salt, and instant yeast. Mix well.
- Add warm milk and egg to the dry ingredients. Stir until a dough forms.
- Knead the dough on a lightly floured surface for 8–10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
- Gradually knead in the softened butter until fully incorporated and the dough becomes soft and glossy.
- Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover, and let rise in a warm place for 1 hour or until doubled in size.
- Punch down the dough and roll it into a large rectangle about ¼-inch thick.
- Cut the dough into long triangles using a knife or pizza cutter.
- In a small bowl, combine chocolate chips and butter. Microwave briefly until softened but not fully melted.
- Place a spoonful of chocolate filling near the wide end of each dough triangle.
- Roll each triangle from the wide end toward the pointed tip to form croissants.
- Place croissants on a parchment-lined baking sheet and let rise for 30–40 minutes until puffy.
- Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C).
- Whisk together the egg and milk for the egg wash. Brush generously over the croissants.
- Bake for 18–22 minutes until golden brown and flaky.
- Cool slightly before serving warm.
Notes
- Use dark chocolate for a richer and less sweet filling.
- Do not overwork the dough to help maintain flaky texture.
- For extra shine, brush with a second layer of egg wash before baking.
- Serve warm for the best chocolate melt and texture.
- Dust with powdered sugar after cooling for a bakery-style finish.
