Description

These homemade churros are crispy on the outside, soft and fluffy on the inside, and coated in sweet cinnamon sugar for a classic bakery-style dessert.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup water
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter, diced
  • 2 tablespoons granulated sugar
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 large cold egg
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Vegetable oil, for frying
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons ground cinnamon

Instructions

  1. In a shallow bowl, combine the sugar and cinnamon for the coating and set aside.
  2. In a saucepan over medium-high heat, combine water, butter, sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt.
  3. Bring the mixture to a gentle boil until the butter melts completely.
  4. Reduce heat to medium-low and add the flour all at once.
  5. Stir continuously until the dough forms a smooth ball and pulls away from the pan.
  6. Transfer the dough to a bowl and let cool for 5 minutes.
  7. Add the cold egg and vanilla extract, then mix until smooth and fully combined.
  8. Transfer the dough to a piping bag fitted with a large star tip.
  9. Heat about 2 inches of vegetable oil to 360°F in a deep pan.
  10. Pipe 6-inch strips of dough into the hot oil, cutting the ends with kitchen scissors.
  11. Fry for about 2 minutes per side until golden brown and crispy.
  12. Remove churros with a slotted spoon and drain briefly on paper towels.
  13. Roll the warm churros in the cinnamon sugar mixture until fully coated.
  14. Serve immediately with chocolate sauce, caramel sauce, or your favorite dipping sauce.

Notes

  • Maintain the oil temperature around 360°F for crispy churros.
  • A star piping tip helps create the classic ridged texture.
  • Do not overcrowd the pan while frying.
  • Cooked churros can be reheated in the oven for best texture.
  • Both cooked and uncooked churros freeze well for up to 3 months.
  • Avoid microwaving churros to prevent sogginess.
