Description
This easy tomato jam is sweet, tangy, slightly spicy, and slow-cooked into a rich glossy spread that pairs perfectly with toast, crackers, sandwiches, and cheese boards.
Ingredients
- 2 pounds ripe roma tomatoes, cored and coarsely chopped
- 3/4 cup light brown sugar
- 2 tablespoons apple cider vinegar
- 1 tablespoon fresh ginger, grated or minced
- 1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1/8 teaspoon ground cloves
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon cayenne pepper
Instructions
- Wash, core, and coarsely chop the tomatoes.
- In a heavy-bottom saucepan, combine the tomatoes, brown sugar, apple cider vinegar, ginger, cinnamon, cloves, salt, and cayenne pepper.
- Place the saucepan over medium-high heat and bring the mixture to a gentle boil, stirring frequently.
- Reduce the heat to low and simmer uncovered for about 30 minutes, stirring occasionally.
- Continue cooking until the mixture becomes thick, glossy, and jam-like.
- Remove the saucepan from the heat and allow the jam to cool to room temperature.
- Transfer the cooled tomato jam to a clean airtight jar or container.
- Refrigerate before serving and enjoy with crackers, toast, sandwiches, burgers, or cheese.
Notes
- Roma tomatoes work best because they contain less water.
- Continue simmering longer if the jam seems too runny.
- Cherry or heirloom tomatoes can also be used.
- Reduce or omit cayenne pepper for a milder flavor.
- Store in the refrigerator for up to 10 days.
- Freeze in airtight containers for up to 3 months.
