Description

A hearty comfort food casserole combining a juicy seasoned meatloaf base with a creamy, cheesy macaroni topping baked until golden and bubbly.


Ingredients

  • 500 g ground beef
  • 50 g breadcrumbs
  • 60 ml milk
  • 1 egg
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 1 clove garlic, minced
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 60 ml ketchup
  • 200 g elbow macaroni, cooked
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 480 ml whole milk
  • 200 g shredded cheddar cheese
  • 1/2 teaspoon mustard powder (optional)
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 180°C (350°F) and grease a 9×13-inch baking dish.
  2. In a bowl, combine ground beef, breadcrumbs, milk, egg, onion, garlic, salt, pepper, Worcestershire sauce, and ketchup.
  3. Mix gently and press evenly into the baking dish.
  4. Bake for 15 minutes to set the meatloaf.
  5. Meanwhile, melt butter in a saucepan over medium heat.
  6. Stir in flour and cook for 1–2 minutes.
  7. Gradually whisk in milk and cook until thickened.
  8. Remove from heat and stir in cheddar cheese until smooth.
  9. Add mustard powder if using and season with salt and pepper.
  10. Fold cooked macaroni into the cheese sauce.
  11. Spread mac and cheese over the partially baked meatloaf.
  12. Top with extra cheese if desired.
  13. Bake for another 20–25 minutes until bubbly and golden.
  14. Let rest for 5 minutes before serving.
