Description

These soft and fluffy burger buns are perfect for homemade burgers, sandwiches, or dinner rolls. With a light texture, buttery flavor, and golden sesame seed topping, this easy foolproof recipe creates bakery-style buns right at home.

Ingredients

  • 3 cups (375 g) all-purpose flour
  • 2 tbsp sugar
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 2 tsp instant yeast
  • 3/4 cup (180 ml) warm milk
  • 1 large egg
  • 2 tbsp butter, softened
  • 2 tbsp warm water
  • 1 egg yolk, for brushing
  • 1 tbsp milk, for brushing
  • Sesame seeds, for topping

Instructions

  1. In a large mixing bowl, combine the all-purpose flour, sugar, salt, and instant yeast. Mix well to evenly distribute the dry ingredients.
  2. Add the warm milk, egg, softened butter, and warm water to the flour mixture. Stir until a dough begins to form.
  3. Knead the dough for about 8–10 minutes until it becomes smooth, soft, and elastic. If the dough feels too sticky, lightly dust with a little flour, but avoid adding too much.
  4. Shape the dough into a ball and place it in a lightly greased bowl. Cover and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour, or until doubled in size.
  5. Gently punch down the risen dough to release excess air. Divide it into 6 to 8 equal portions.
  6. Shape each portion into a smooth ball and place them on a parchment-lined baking tray with space between each bun.
  7. Cover the buns and let them rise again for 30–40 minutes until puffy and nearly doubled.
  8. Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).
  9. Whisk together the egg yolk and 1 tablespoon milk. Brush the tops of the buns with the mixture.
  10. Sprinkle sesame seeds on top if desired.
  11. Bake for 15–18 minutes or until the tops are golden brown.
  12. Remove from the oven and cool slightly on a wire rack before serving.

Notes

  • Use fresh yeast for the best rise and texture.
  • Avoid adding too much extra flour to keep the buns soft and fluffy.
  • The dough should feel slightly tacky but manageable after kneading.
  • For extra softness, cover the warm buns with a clean towel after baking.
  • You can brush melted butter over the baked buns for a softer crust and richer flavor.
  • Freeze fully cooled buns in an airtight bag for up to 2 months.
  • These buns work great for burgers, sandwiches, sliders, and breakfast rolls.
