Ingredients

  • 1 large head of cabbage
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 medium onion, finely diced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 3/4 cup uncooked long-grain rice
  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1 pound ground lamb or additional ground beef
  • 1 large egg, lightly beaten
  • 1 can (32 ounces) diced tomatoes
  • 1/2 tablespoon smoked paprika
  • 1 teaspoon dried dill
  • 1 1/2 cups reserved cabbage cooking water
  • Salt to taste
  • Black pepper to taste

Instructions

  1. Boil whole cabbage for 3–5 minutes until outer leaves soften.
  2. Remove leaves carefully and set aside, reserving cooking water.
  3. Heat olive oil and sauté onion and garlic until soft.
  4. Add rice, cook briefly, then let mixture cool.
  5. Combine ground meats, rice mixture, egg, paprika, dill, salt, and pepper.
  6. Place filling on cabbage leaves and roll tightly, folding sides in.
  7. Arrange rolls seam-side down in a pot or slow cooker.
  8. Pour diced tomatoes and reserved cabbage water over rolls.
  9. Cook on high for 30 minutes, then low for 6–6.5 hours.
